Mr. Perry Throckmorton, vice chancellor of the university, heard the phone ring on his private number. Not a lot of people outside of his family knew of this number. The chancellor obviously didn't want students to have it; otherwise he would be inundated with all types of queries and requests. He had learned that fact from years of experience. He used his trifocal glasses to read the caller on the ID of the display.

"Good evening, Mr. Schulz. It's been a long time since we've heard from one of our major benefactors. What can I do for you?"

"Mr. Throckmorton, Perry, I have a problem that is concerning me. I hope you can help. Sorry to call so late."

"You've contributed much to your alma mater over the years, and we are very grateful. I’ve also seen that you've done some great things in the archaeological field, not to mention your contributions to our collections. Be assured we will do anything we can to help you with your problem."

"Have you seen the evening news?" Shultz asked.

"No, sir, I have not. I just returned home from a very long meeting. What's going on?”

"I see that one of your professors, a certain Bridget Donovan, has been making claims about discoveries that she and her brother have allegedly uncovered. A few minutes ago, the Vatican repudiated all of their claims and said they have nothing to back up what the Donavans are saying. The Donavans have unleashed a hoax on the world."

There was a silence on the line as Throckmorton took some time to allow the full impact of Schultz's news to sink in. Throckmorton realized that Schultz was somehow going to take advantage of this fact. Schultz obviously realized that a prestigious New England school couldn't afford to have an international scandal on its doorstep. So what did he want?

"This does present a problem,” Throckmorton said. “I'll hold an emergency meeting of the council tomorrow morning to discuss these events. We'll need more information, but I assume that what you're saying is accurate."

"It is a fact," Shultz said.

Again Throckmorton waited. He was certain that Schultz was not calling him to inform him of the latest news that everybody would know in a few hours at most. The man wanted something.

"I have been in this position for many years. I can read between the lines, and I believe can discern the purpose of your call. I will put it in good terms first. You are trying to protect the honor of the university to make sure no scandal or slander is accredited to our campus. For that to happen, I can see the road we need to go down to ensure the university is held blameless in this matter. The second point is a little more dubious. Do you have a personal interest in Bridget Donovan?" Throckmorton asked.

"Of course it is only the reputation of the school in which I am interested. I only call to make sure you are on top of this and will take the earliest possible necessary actions," Shultz said.
